Riverbend Ranch Beef Fuels the Next Generation of Grillers

Small hands, big burgers and plenty of imagination were on display at the Smoke-N-Wings Kids-Q competition.

Riverbend Ranch sponsored both divisions of the Smoke-N-Wings Kids-Q competition in June 2026 by providing the high-quality ground beef used by the young competitors. While older children also took part, this story focuses on the youngest division, where kids ages 5 to 10 shaped, seasoned and topped burgers limited only by their imaginations.

The Kids-Q took place alongside a Kansas City Barbeque Society-sanctioned professional competition that drew teams from across the United States and Canada, giving the children a firsthand introduction to the world of competitive barbecue.

The competitors shaped patties, selected seasonings, planned toppings and prepared burgers that reflected their own tastes and personalities. Parents and family members were nearby to offer age-appropriate help, but the children were encouraged to do as much of the work as possible.

The result was an afternoon filled with learning, laughter and some seriously impressive burgers.

A Natural Fit for Riverbend Ranch

For Riverbend Ranch, supporting the Kids-Q was also a way to help young people understand the care, skill and effort behind the food they prepare and enjoy. Producing high-quality beef starts with careful breeding, responsible animal care and attention to detail.

That same commitment to care, quality and doing things the right way made the Kids-Q a natural event to support. The competition gave children the chance to work with a quality ingredient, learn practical cooking skills and experience the pride that comes from preparing something themselves.

Ground beef also gave the young grillers plenty of room to be creative. It was approachable for first-time cooks while still offering endless possibilities for seasonings, toppings and presentation.

Once their burgers were ready, the children carefully boxed their entries and presented them for judging. Each burger was evaluated on appearance, taste and tenderness.

A $300 top prize in each age division added a little extra excitement to the friendly competition.

Big Ideas from Young Cooks

The competitors showed that great burgers can come from grillers of any age.

Ten-year-old Ruby Stites earned first place with an avocado burger that impressed the judges. Her winning entry combined a creative flavor idea with careful preparation and presentation.

Several of the children were already experienced competitors.

Eight-year-old Heinrich was participating in the Kids-Q for the fifth time. He had earned second- and third-place finishes in previous competitions and returned ready to try again.

“My favorite part is seeing who wins and loses,” he said.

For nine-year-old Mariano, barbecue was part of a family tradition.

“I did it last year,” he said. “My grandma and grandpa are with me today and they taught me how to BBQ.”

His story reflected the spirit of the event: families spending time together, children learning from adults they trust and cooking traditions being passed to a new generation.

More Than a Burger Competition

The trophies and prizes gave the children something exciting to work toward, but the value of the Kids-Q extended beyond the final scores.

The young competitors practiced patience, followed instructions, made decisions and learned how much effort goes into preparing a meal. They also experienced the satisfaction of presenting something they had created with their own hands.

Riverbend Ranch was proud to sponsor both divisions by providing the beef for an event that encouraged children to build confidence, learn useful skills and create memories with their families.

For these young grillers, it was more than a day at the barbecue pit. It was a chance to learn, compete and discover just how much they could accomplish, one Riverbend Ranch burger at a time.
